Okay...come on. The only way a garden can grow is with dirt. Right? Apparently not, as the Aerogarden official site would have us believe. Taken from their site, "NASA tested aeroponic technology grows plants in water, nutrients and air – so simply and easily that anyone can succeed." Really?
After researching consumer opinions, it seems that the biggest problem with the Aerogarden is the grow lights. The lights are very bright, and if people are bothered by the light during the sleeping time, it may not be an ideal thing to have. However, this is addressed in the owner's manual. For me, after getting the Aerogarden, I put it on my kitchen table, which is a ways from my bedroom, so the lights do not bother me for sleeping. But I understand the problem--the lights are extremely bright.
One way to handle that is to reset the lights to turn on very early in the morning, and then it will turn off at bedtime each night. (This is explained in the owner's manual step by step, so you can overcome this issue.)
Another issue that people had is that a lot of the seeds and grow pods weren't doing well, or coming up. The heartier plants, like the basil, came up great for people, but the other plants that aren't normally known to be as hearty like the parsley or the cilantro were the ones that were not coming up as well for people. To solve this issue, however, the company will take back the failed pods and send new ones at customer request.
Overall, the opinions on the Internet was that, despite several problems, the Aerogarden is far superior to traditional growing methods. If you want the hassles of going through: finding the right spot for it, setting it up, reading the directions, waiting to see if the seeds will grow or not...then go for it!
